International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend

August 20-22 2010.

Each year, on the 3rd full weekend in August, many hundreds of amateur radio operators set up stations as close as possible to lighthouses around the world. It also coincides with International Lighthouse Day on the Sunday, in an event organised by the International Association of Lighthouse Keepers.

In 2010, 246 lighthouse locations will be represented and 39 of these are in Australia. From Cape Capricorn in the north east, to Table Cape in the south, and Cape Leeuwin in the west.

The aim of the weekend is to promote public awareness of lighthouses and lightships and their need for preservation and restoration, to promote amateur radio and to foster International goodwill.

Two special activities are organised for the south coast of NSW. The Wollongong Breakwater lighthouse built in 1872 will be re-lit on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. The light shining over the water at Wollongong Harbour has not been a regular sight since it was turned off in 1974.

Green Cape Lighthouse, 25km south of Eden will provide a spectacular sight, as it's "1st order" lens will be re-lit for only the 2nd time since it was replaced by a much smaller plastic lens in 1992. The lighting of a 1st order lens, over 3 metres high and 2 metres in diameter, is a rare occurrence on the south coast of NSW, and over the weekend Green Cape Lighthouse will be the only lens of that size shining between Wollongong and Melbourne.

The lighthouse will be open for tours during the day. Special night tours will operate also.
